La Posibilidad de la Ternura | The Possibility of Tenderness

La Resentida | Marco Layera

Chilean youngsters take the floor in this documentary theater performance: they are permanently educated to a masculinity that punishes fragility and affection. Sensitivity and empathy are interpreted as weakness. Through the life stories of seven teenagers from Santiago de Chile, The Possibility of Tenderness questions the position of masculinity in our lives and in our societies.

Is a different masculinity possible?

In the internationally acclaimed project Paisajes para no colorear, La Re-sentida placed the stories of young women from Santiago de Chile on stage in a direct, raw and powerful manner. The performance was greeted with cheers and tears during a never ending world tour for the performers’ suffering, anger and the power of their performances. As a consequence and extension of this work, Marco Layera and his team now want to question the construct of masculinity. One effect of the war in Ukraine has been that notions of masculinity are more than ever associated with strength, control and power. The war confronts us with images of this on a daily basis, while the struggle against historic machismo and questioning of male identities continue to be necessary and still produce intense reactions. But how do young people who are perceived as male position themselves between feminism and patriarchy? Are they also victims of a toxic system – or do they share responsibility for it? Is a different masculinity possible? La Re-sentida have produced a project in which young people who are perceived as male can describe and present their position in life and in society. The play has been developed from true stories and includes young people not only as performers but also as authors, making them an integral part of a social and artistic process.

About La Re-sentid
La Re-sentida ('resentment') was founded in 2008 and is composed of young artists from the Chilean national theatrical scene who share an aim to pursue the consolidation of a poetic able to embody the pulses, visions and ideas of their generation. It's the company's view that theatre needs to have the courage to break taboos, slaughter sacred cows and provoke in order to lead people to reflect. La Re-sentida employs a subversive approach to theatre, understanding it as an instrument of critique and reflection. Assuming their political responsibility, the group question ideologies in the light of the current state of (Chilean) society in crisis.
