Noord Nederlands Orkest
Beethoven 9
In 2023, the Noord Nederlands Orkest performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Lowlands. It became a special moment, with the audience responding enthusiastically and emotionally to this classical masterpiece. The success was due to the strong collaboration between the orchestra, the audience, and chief conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen.
Now, this symphony is being performed again in the concert hall, once again under the direction of Gullberg Jensen. The setting is different from a festival, but the power of the music remains the same. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony has a special significance and has spoken to audiences for generations.
The beginning of the symphony is often compared to the creation of the universe or the act of creation itself. From almost silence, the music gradually grows into a large and powerful whole. In the famous final movement, something very new for its time happens: a choir and soloists join in a symphony. They sing about freedom, unity, and brotherhood.
The famous melody from this movement later became the European anthem. This music has become a symbol of peace and connection worldwide, making the symphony ever-relevant.
This performance features four soloists: soprano Mari Eriksmoen, mezzo-soprano Allison Cook, tenor Michael Schade, and bass Albert Dohmen. The choir is sung by the NNCK. Together with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, they bring Beethoven’s impressive Symphony No. 9 to life.
