Bach’s compelling masterpiece, The Matthäus Passion, chronicles the final days of Jesus. Impressive, not solely as a musical piece, but as a narrative epic as well. A penetrating and recognizable human story about love and hate, friendship and betrayal, sadness and comfort. Wrapped in perhaps the most spellbinding music ever written.
The NNO annually surprises the audience with an idiosyncratic performance of this masterpiece, with this year Jan Willem de Vriend on the rostrum. De Vriend gained an international attention as a baroque specialist, and works as a conductor with orchestras in Spain, France, and Germany, among others. He is accompanied by an all-star cast: tenor Andreas Weller as Evangelist, baritone Geert Smits as Christ, soprano Ilse Eerens, alto Luciana Mancini, bass André Morsch, the Noord Nederlands Concertkoor and the Roder Jongenskoor. Bach at his best!
