Since the inception of cinema, films have been accompanied by music. Cinematographer Lukas van Woerkum turns this around: he creates films to provide images to existing music. For Symphonic Cinema – The Echo of Being, Van Woerkum combines Gustav Mahler’s compositions with biographical details of his family: Gustav, his wife Alma, and their daughter Marina. The Noord Nederlands Orkest, conducted by Anthony Hermus, will provide music to the images. Or wait – isn’t it the other way around?

Since the inception of cinema, films have been accompanied by music. Initially because the sound was missing and music replaced the actors’ speech, but later on to create the atmosphere and punctuate actions in film.

Cinematographer Lukas van Woerkum turns this around: he creates films to provide images to existing music. He has done this before with the ballets Firebird by Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloë. Now Van Woerkum has been working on the music of Gustav Mahler. Biographical details from the life of the Mahler family – Gustav, his wife Alma, and their daughter Marina – are intertwined with the music of Totenfeier, the Fourth and Ninth Symphony. This creates a whole new work, a Gesamtkuntswerk of: Symphonic Cinema – The Echo of Being.

The Noord Nederlands Orkest, conducted by Anthony Hermus, will provide music to the images. Or wait – isn’t it the other way around?
