Dutch Classical Talent
Dokwerk Saxophone Quartet
In a world that keeps spinning faster, we sometimes seek moments of calm. A place where it’s quiet — where you can just be yourself, without distractions or expectations. In No Man Is an Island, the Dokwerk Saxophone Quartet shows how music can evoke that space. Not as an escape, but as a return to yourself. Dutch Classical Talent is an eighteen-month development program for young classical musicians from the Netherlands.
The quartet consists of Lisa Schreiber, Jen-Hong Wu, Ileana Termini, and Pedro Silva. Together, they present a special program centered around silence, tension, and connection. The title refers to the famous quote by English poet John Donne: “No man is an island.” It reminds us that we are not separate from one another but deeply connected.
The music takes you through various moods and worlds. You’ll hear Mishima by Philip Glass, a tranquil piece with slowly shifting repetitive patterns. In 7 Capricci by Jörg Widmann, playful and sometimes unpredictable sounds full of expression emerge. Wim Henderickx’s The Seven Chakras introduces you to the body’s inner energy centers, translated into intense and colorful music. And in A Shimmering Light by Ramin Amin Tafreshi, a hopeful radiance shines through.
The four saxophonists play with great sensitivity and mutual connection. Each piece demands something different from them: stillness, explosive energy, or careful balance. The result is a concert that invites you to become still, to listen, and to feel.
No Man Is an Island is a musical reflection on being alone and being together. On what silence can teach us, and how music can connect us — to ourselves and to each other.
