We don't live here anymore
A web of desire and deceit
In We Don’t Live Here Anymore, we follow two couples who, at first glance, seem content. But beneath the surface, something else is brewing: longing, guilt, and betrayal. The characters become entangled in what they feel, what they say, and what they leave unspoken. What drives them? Passion, routine — or a deep, unfulfilled need?
Theatre maker Jakop Ahlbom invited writer Marijke Schermer to create a new text for the stage. Her script is delivered through voice-over, while the performers express the emotional undercurrents in Ahlbom’s signature physical language. What is spoken and what is suppressed unfold simultaneously, creating a charged dialogue between word and movement.
The performance draws inspiration from several sources: the novellas We Don’t Live Here Anymore and In the Bedroom by Andre Dubus, Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates, and films like Closer (Mike Nichols) and Husbands and Wives (Woody Allen). At their core, all these stories explore the complexities of love, desire, and the consequences of our choices.
We Don’t Live Here Anymore captures the moment when past decisions begin to weigh heavily. The characters find themselves at a breaking point, questioning the lives they’ve built. Instead of resigning themselves to what is, they search for what might still be possible. The result is a poignant portrayal of pain, doubt, and the quiet strength of lovers in transformation.
