Lotte Pen
Minimal Sessions
What does the mass mean in today’s world, in a time when more and more people no longer believe? Saxophonist and composer Lotte Pen asked herself that question — and set out in search of a new answer. Together with vocalist Sytse Buwalda, she created The Alt. Mass: an alternative mass for saxophones, voice, and electronics.
For centuries, people have found comfort, hope, and emotion in the structure of the mass. Its music, its atmosphere, its rituals — they offer reflection and connection. The Alt. Mass explores whether that same sense of meaning can still be felt today, beyond religion. The music is cinematic and meditative, yet layered and full of tension. It evokes images and invites listeners into a sonic journey that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Lotte Pen is part of a new generation of classical musicians. As a saxophonist, she has performed in concert halls around the world, from Tokyo to New York. Yet she chose to take a different path — one where she creates her own music, blending elements of pop, neoclassical, and film scores. Her innovative style shines through in The Alt. Mass.
Vocalist Sytse Buwalda, known for his warm tone and expressive delivery, adds another emotional layer to the performance. Together, Pen and Buwalda create a unique fusion of voice and saxophone, enhanced by immersive electronic textures.
“Utterly intriguing! The music has something trance-like — I just let myself be carried away.”
– Lex Bohlmeijer, NPO Klassiek
“The restlessness in the music gives way to calm, extended saxophone tones that surprisingly evoke a deep sense of stillness.”
A breathtaking contemporary mass for saxophones, voices, and electronics — a new ritual for a new time.
