To Die For [A Comedy]
In the new opera To Die For by composer Elena Langer, heavy themes such as death, despair and fame are highlighted in a sharp and humorous way. The story is based on the 1928 play The Suicide by Nikolai Erdman. This dark comedy centers on the existential struggle of Semyón Podsekayev.
Semyón is a man without a job and without prospects. In sheer desperation he decides to end his life. But when even his last hope, learning to play the tuba, fails, it seems there is no way back. At that moment all kinds of characters appear who want to use his suicide for their own gain. A TV host, a priest, a politician – they all see opportunities in his despair.
In the second act the story shifts into a television show titled The Naked Truth. In it Semyón’s potential suicide is transformed into a public spectacle. His personal crisis becomes entertainment. Everyone wants a share of the fame, the drama and the profit.
Elena Langer, a British Russian composer, is known for her colourful and often satirical music. Her works are performed throughout Europe and the United States. She gained international recognition with Figaro Gets a Divorce, praised for its direct emotional impact.
To Die For was originally commissioned by a Russian theatre but was cancelled after the invasion of Ukraine. It was deemed not patriotic enough. The Dutch National Touring Opera now presents the world premiere of this unique work.
This opera makes you think yet does so with humour and momentum. Langer combines sharp texts, absurd situations and a highly theatrical musical style. She questions our fascination with celebrity, the role of the media and how we cope with chaos and uncertainty in life.
To Die For is an opera for anyone who loves satire, contemporary themes and surprising music.
Disclaimer: this production contains the theme of suicide.
