Inspired by the seminal postcolonial text, Orientalism, Guy Weizman embarks on a major interdisciplinary performance about how the East and West currently view each other. Yara’s Wedding is a mix of dance and dialogue in which different perspectives interact, collide, and merge. Do we still look at the Other through colonial eyes? And what does the Other think of that?

In 1978, the Palestinian-American scholar Edward Said wrote one of the most influential texts for postcolonial studies: Orientalism. The book’s main departure is the exoticized-colonialist view with which the West looks at the East and how it influences the way in which the West treats and studies those areas. An exotic, non-existent East that is considered primitive and unenlightened is a view reinforced by cultural expressions in film, theatre and literature. Said points to the white glasses which limit the Eastward view.

Inspired by Said’s book, Guy Weizman, in collaboration with Schauspiel Hannover, is creating a major interdisciplinary performance about how East and West currently view each other. Do we still look at the Other through colonial eyes? And what does the Other think of that?

Both the Mauritian writer Mohammedou Ould Slahi and the Dutch writer Rik van den Bos are present in rehearsals. The actors and dancers also come from different cultures spanning the East and West. This allows space for a multicultural dialogue in which different perspectives interact and collide. And the space probes the audience to question: with what gaze do you look at the Other and his place in the world?
