The Van Baerle Trio is made up of Hannes Minnaar (piano), Maria Milstein (violin), and Gideon den Herder (cello). They met during their studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and took their first steps together on Van Baerlestraat — the street that gave the trio its name. Since then, their collaboration has blossomed into a close-knit ensemble with international acclaim.
In 2011, the trio won the Concertgebouw’s Vriendenkrans Competition. This was followed by a European tour as ECHO Rising Stars, performing in iconic halls like the Musikverein in Vienna, the Barbican in London, and the Philharmonie in Cologne. Victories at the ARD Competition in Munich and the chamber music competition in Lyon further cemented their international reputation.
They’ve collaborated with major figures such as Dmitri Ferschtman, Ferenc Rados, and Claus-Christian Schuster. A particularly meaningful encounter was with Menahem Pressler in 2008 — his musical insights still influence the trio’s playing today. Since 2014, the trio members have been passing on their experience to young musicians at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
Their discography is rich and varied. Their debut CD, featuring works by Saint-Saëns, Loevendie, and Ravel, was awarded an Edison Klassiek. This was followed by recordings of Mendelssohn’s piano trios and a complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano trios, which received glowing reviews, including five-star ratings from De Volkskrant, Trouw, and Gramophone.
Contemporary composers are also inspired by the trio. In 2022, Gabriel Prokofiev wrote a new work especially for them. In March 2024, a brand-new piano trio by Rob Zuidam premiered during the Friday Evening Concert Series by AvroTros at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht.
The Van Baerle Trio performs frequently across the Netherlands — from major concert halls to small, intimate venues. In 2024, they can be heard at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, TivoliVredenburg, and Musis Sacrum, among others.
